About Us Thunderbird Mountain Trading Company dba Hiawatha Trading

The World Famous Thunderbird Mountain Trading Company now called Hiawatha Trading, can be discovered where the Redwoods meet the Sea, on Scenic U.S. Highway 101 in Northern California, at 299 Highway 101 South, Crescent City California in Del Norte County.
Captain Shon has been in the Smoked Salmon business since the early 1980's. His former location, the Klamath Trading Post, was where he mastered the Cold Smoking Method, where the Salmon is cured by the smoke, not cooked by heat. He uses both Wild Alaskan King or Chinook Salmon as well as Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon, Ocean-Caught off the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska, the coldest, cleanest waters in the world.
He also has worked with the Native American Indians since the 1970's.
We are very proud and honored to be the United States Distributor for the Huron-Wendat Indian Tribe. A member of the Iroquois Nation, these descendants of Hiawatha proudly hand make their Native American "Hiawatha" brand of moccasins using Moosehide, deer hide, buffalo hide, caribou hide, bull hide and a variety of hand made suede hand beaded and trimmed with furs such as; Mongolian sheep fur, rabbit fur, fox fur and beaver. You have a choice of soles, the traditional single leather or suede sole, a cushioned double leather sole, rubber soles, or crepe soles. We have a large selection of women's slippers, moccasins, ankle high moccasins, Chukka Boots (short boots), Mukluks (tall boots), soft Infant moccasins, children's moccasins for all ages, & a large range of moccasins & mukluks for men.
There are only 6 people in the entire tribe still practicing their ancient art of Moosehair Tufting, or Moosehair Embroidery. The Moosehair Embroidery is a technique exclusive to the Huron-Wendat nation and it is with great pride that they carry on this tradition of respect and acknowledgement towards the generosity of the Great Spirit. This Moosehair Tufting can be found on many of their moccasins, as their personal traditional "signature".
We also have a large selection of handmade Navajo Kachina Dolls or Dancers, Navajo Sand Paintings & Navajo and Huron Dream Catchers. As well as hand carved Navajo Fetishes and Peace Pipes.
We bring many handmade textiles from Peru, created by the descendants of the Incas, such as Alpaca rugs, hats, ponchos, teddy bears, scarves, and a large variety of Alpaca shoulder bags, and Pima Cotton scarves and shawls.
We also carry a large variety of furs and fur rugs and blankets and pillowcases from throughout North. Central & South America.
